Famous Cities of the World : Cairo

Cairo is the capital city of Egypt and it hosts around 16 million people. Cairo, the city of the 1000 minarets is situated on the Nile, the longest river of the world. Cairo is a city of intense symbols and juxtapositions, laden to the point of being unbearable. Cairo is even sadder in light of its recent history. The region was experiencing an economic decline before the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and this decline can certainly be blamed for part of the depression Cairo now suffers.

Cairo is almost every Egypt Pyramid, such as the Great Pyramids of Giza on the very edge of the city. There are also ancient temples, tombs, Christian churches, magnificent Muslim monuments etc within or nearby the city.

Cairo is a noisy, exciting, and friendly city with an interesting mix of modern buildings and mud-brick houses, making for an unusual spectacle. Most associate Cairo with The Great Pyramids of Egypt with are found in nearby Giza, however, Cairo has many of its own attractions to offer such as its museums, bars, bazaars, and local restaurants. Cairo is the sixteenth most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is also the most populous metropolitan area in Africa. Cairo is busy, noisy and full of bustle. It’s exhilarating, but it can be tiring.

Cairo is a large city, so considered to be the largest city in Africa. Cairo is a complex blend of different civilizations and therefore is unique to live in. Greater Cairo extends on the banks of the River Nile to the south of the delta. Cairo is hectic, but I loved it! The pyramids look old and tired?

Cairo is beset by choking pollution- fumes from the 2 million cars, many junky old Fiats- even at 3am on a winter night, and a fine desert dust that covers everything. A few hours on the street is equivalent to smoking a pack of cigarettes, and one is literally slapped by particles as some cars zip by. Cairo is a shopper's paradise. The finest of world brands are on display in our shop windows, at exciting prices, and the local produce, particularly in the clothes department, offers luxurious quality at unbeatable prices.

Cairo is the administrative center of Egypt, but like the rest of the country, statistical information about the city is sometimes difficult. Certainly we can produce relatively accurate figures on such topics as land area, temperature and average rainfall, but the population, and particularly statistics about the population are problematic because it is so large and much of its populations lives, so to speak, under the radar of the government.

Cairo is facing a housing problem. The lack of satisfactory and affordable housing for the rapidly growing population has forced many poor Egyptians to make cemeteries in the city of the Dead as their permanent homes. Cairo is a haven for refugees from neighboring African and Arab countries. Given the limited capabilities of aid agencies in the country and restrictiveness of an official status, the population of unregistered refugees is likely to be much greater.

Cairo is the religious and intellectual heart not only of the Arab world, but of Islam world-wide. If Obama were to address the Muslim world, this was the place to do it. Cairo is the largest city in Africa and 13th in the world. The city lies on the banks of the Nile just south of where the Nile delta forms, on its way to the Mediterranean Sea.
Cairo is a very affordable place to buy gold. A well-known market is El Hussein, and although it is more on the brochure, it is a very reputable place for purchasing gold.
